Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication of Diabetes. It occurs when there is too little insulin in the body, blood sugar levels rise, the body begins to break down it’s own fat for energy, resulting in a toxic level of acids called ketones. While it’s more common among type I diabetics, type II diabetics also go into DKA.
Symptoms of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) are astonishingly similar to the flu-like illness Brittany Murphy is reported to have been dealing with in the week leading up to her death. According to the Mayo Clinic, Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) symptoms include:
Nausea and vomiting
Abdominal pain
Shortness of breath
Weakness and fatigue
Loss of appetite
Confusion
Symptoms are often confused as the flu, and without proper treatment the diabetic may not realize they are in Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). Often times the nausea and vomiting result in the diabetic abruptly stopping their medication, causing a critical situation that can ultimately lead to loss of consciousness and death.
How is it possible Brittany Murphy went into Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)? Here’s what we know. She was a type 2 diabetic. Recently she had been reported as appearing to have lost some weight, not uncommon among diabetics in Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). Their body is essentially eating itself away. She complained of shortness of breath, stomach pain, and nausea.
Reports are the morning of her death, she was vomiting consistently. We’re told Murphy was taking prescription meds for flu-like symptoms she had been experiencing for several days. According to TMZ, Brittany Murphy also had a prescription for antibiotics on her nightstand. Typically Diabetic Ketoacidosis is brought on by an underlying illness, commonly a urinary tract or other bacterial infection. If she did go into Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), with the proper inpatient treatment there would have only been a 5% chance of mortality.
Pending the completion of additional testing ordered by the L.A. County Coroner, including toxicology report, histopathology studies (study of her organs) and neuropathology examination (study of her brain) in the next 4 to 6 weeks, the only thing we do know is that a young, seemingly healthy 32 year old died of a cardiac arrest.
So is it possible that actress Brittany Murphy was not anorexic and did not overdose, as some rumors in Hollywood would suggest, but rather succumbed to Diabetic Ketoacidosis, an unfortunate complication of her diabetes? It is possible, but we won’t know the answer to that question for another 4 to 6 weeks. Until then all we will know is that Hollywood has lost another bright star in the prime of her career.
